Fifteen years ago, Phil Baumann, RN, BSN, would have deemed social media efforts useless. Today, he considers himself a father, an employee and a full-fledged Twitter-user, spending four to five hours of everyday sending out tweets and gaining followers. Part of his new-found interest in microsharing stems from his fear of being a 50-year-old dad unaware of what his son is doing, Baumann said. But he's also thrilled by the possibilities an application like Twitter presents.
"Twitter is a community in the form of technology; it connects you to another human being," Baumann said. "When you search Twitter, you search the human brain."
In January 2009, Baumann posted a list of 140 Healthcare Uses for Twitter on his website. In 23 slides, Baumann makes the case for why "healthcare should be the leader in microsharing," and asks, "why isn't it?"
