During a visit to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, ADVANCE captured Levon Nazarian, MD, performing a musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound exam of a patient's rotator cuff.
Dr. Nazarian, who regularly works with the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles as well as other professional athletes, strongly advocates the use of MSK ultrasound by physicians and sonographers in the radiology department. Radiologists who refuse to add ultrasound to their musculoskeletal imaging armamentarium, and instead allow other specialties to take control, are doing themselves and their profession a disservice, Dr. Nazarian says.
"Radiologists need to take ownership of this field and understand that if they're going to provide optimum musculoskeletal imaging and treatment, they need to have ultrasound in their arsenal," he says.
